What is TYJP? TYJP, or Triangle Young Jewish Professionals, is a group that holds regular social activities to bring together individuals in their twenties and thirties.
What types of activities do you hold? Typically, we have two to three activities planned a month. One is usually some form of a happy hour at a local bar or restaurant. The other could be a sports activity, educational discussion, a picnic, or cultural exposition. We are branching out to offer religious and community service activities. Any individual can sponsor an activity or special interest group. These could include an investment club, book club, or about any other possibility. TYJP is run by members.
Who runs TYJP? TYJP is sponsored and run by its members. Currently eight board members are responsible for its steering.
Do I have to pay $5 to come to events? No, TYJP will not exclude anyone from attending any event. We encourage everyone within our community to support our group. Most social and service groups are supported by dues, TYJP is no exception. There are costs in running an organization. The more money we have the better we can publicize our events and underwrite our events.
What are some benefits of joining TYJP? TYJP members know that they are building a community and an organization. We will soon have a members' only electronic mailing list for members to post ads, invite other members to ad-hoc activities, and provide information in a timely manner. This list will provide a monthly capsule of Jewish activities in and around the triangle. Members also receive discounts at functions throughout the year.
What are the average ages for TYJP members? We have a suggested age range from 21 - 40+. However, these are suggested ages. The suggestion is a matter of life experiences. We do not expect a 21 year old and a 35 year old to share many of the same life experiences. At the same junction, someone that is 37 might fit in well with the group. Someone that is 45 might have a harder time.
How many people come to TYJP events? We usually range from 20-50 people. Individuals do not always show up at our events. If everyone continually showed up, we might be out of space. With the rotation of people, it is always good to show up at a multiple events to try to assess numbers. It is less important to think about the numbers than to enjoy yourself.
How many Jews live in the Triangle? We're not sure. The Wake Federation says that there are over 2000 households in Wake County (Raleigh). The major Universities also have many Jews on campus. Please contact the local Federations for their newcomer's kits. There are over 8 synagogues in the Triangle, if that is of any help; please visit our “Synagogues & Temples” page for more details.
Why does it seem as if there are more events in Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill? We try to space the events out, but TYJP is run by volunteers and it is up to the volunteers where they would like to hold their events. You can volunteer for an event by sending an e-mail to tyjp@nc.rr.com or coming to a quarterly planning meeting.
How do I get involved? First, come out to the activities! You can contact any board member by e-mail, submit a survey/contact form, or ask at a regular get-together.
Got a question that isn't here, submit it to tyjp@nc.rr.com
